Big Al’s had always supported OHSU’s Doernbecher Children’s Hospital since Big Al’s Vancouver opened in 2006.
As a business — no, as a community asset — we opened our doors with the specific aim of supporting all things kids, mothers seeking respite from domestic abuse, and food banks where upwards of 40% of the recipients are under 12.
Our support of Doernbecher became incredibly, and scarily, personal for Big Al’s CEO Daniel Kirkwood, Melissa Kirkwood, and the Kirkwood family in 2013.

We’d like to call out a very special someone who has made this Event such a success over the course of the years; Norm Reilly. Norm was instrumental in leading the Dru’s Chapter for many years and for being the Master Organizer for our event since inception. Norm wasn’t able to participate in this year’s event and passed shortly after hearing we helped to raise $50,001 at this year’s Bowl-a-thon.
We learned he asked his wife from his hospice bed: “Did I make a difference?”.
Yes, Norm. Absolutely you made a difference… to us and to all of the Doernbecher babies & families you’ve so lovingly supported.
